On August 1, 2026, I took a day trip to Brighton for my birthday, which is actually August 2, but Sunday trains being what they are...
I had contemplated visiting Southend-on-Sea where I haven’t been since I was a kid, but I’ve been to Brighton much more recently, more than once, know it reasonably well, and most importantly, I can get there direct by fast train from East Croydon. Had I realised they were holding the misnamed annual Pride event, I would definitely have chosen Southend, but by the time I did, it was too late.
Having said that, I am not unhappy with the outcome, especially meeting the gent interviewed here. This short video has been heavily redacted although his identity is no big secret. I had to wait a few minutes to speak to him because a group of volunteers from a local charity was ensuring he had enough water.
I started off by asking him how much were the three toy ducks at his feet but he told me they were not for sale. To hear what else he told me, play the video.
The answer to his last question, what would he do if he had three wishes, was to help someone else!
Like many homeless people he has a mobile phone; charities hand them out. I have his number so if anyone is in a position to help him, contact me with a phone number and I will pass it on, regardless of what I said early this year about white knighting.

The people who used the unfortunate but very public death of a small time criminal and drug addict in Minneapolis as a pretext for burning American cities and rioting all over the world mocked the assassination of this man, a father of two, who was doing his best to make healthcare affordable for all Americans.
The same people applauded the assassination of this man, who was likewise a father of two. Charlie Kirk’s only crime was to debate people in public, and he would take on all comers.
Now, the very same people are weeping buckets for this woman, who was brainwashed into harassing ICE agents in Minnesota, and paid the ultimate price.
If “Chestnuts” sounds extremely simply that is because it is the first piece of music I ever composed, circa 1979. It was written on the acoustic guitar at Chestnut Avenue, Leeds. The jazz musician Xero Slingsby lived in the same house for a time. I found out a year or two ago that he had died young.
